Shaanxi Normal University(SNNU), founded in 1944, is under the direct administration of the Ministry of Education of China and among the first round list of China’s Double First-Class Initiative. Known as “the cradle of teachers”, the university serves as an important base to cultivate teachers, educational management cadres as well as senior specialists. SNNU is located in ancient capital Xi’an with two campuses, Chang’an campus and Yanta campus.


Since its establishment, with 510,000 graduates having been cultivated so far, the university contributes to advancing the national education and regional economic and social development, especially to promoting the development of teacher education and elementary education in the western China.

The university has established 27 schools, 1 basic experimental teaching center. There are currently 3,442 full-time teachers, including 679 professors and 874 associate professors, more than 19,000 undergraduates, 12,200 postgraduates and 600 international students. The library collection boasts 4.16 million printed books, including over 92 databases and more than 2.68 million electronic books. Two museums, the Red Candle School History Museum and the first comprehensive education museum in China are built on campus, in which 5 collection themes are included, namely the China Education Collection, Women’s Culture Collection, History and Culture Collection, and Calligraphy and Painting Art Collection.


The university has a complete range of disciplines with distinct features,covering philosophy, economics, law, education, literature, history, science, engineering, medicine, management, art and inter-disciplines. It has one national First-Class Disciplines (Chinese Language and Literature), 2 provincial First-Class Disciplines, 4 national key disciplines, 25 first-level disciplines authorized for doctoral degrees, 35 first-level disciplines authorized for master degrees. The university now has 2 program of professional doctor degree, 25 programs of professional master degree, 20 centers for post-doctoral studies. 13 disciplines have ranked the top 1% of ESI worldwide, in which chemistry, material science, agriculture science have ranked the top 2‰.


The university focuses on key technology and research area, and vigorously strengthens basic research and scientific innovation. The university owns 1 national engineering laboratory, 3 key laboratories of the Ministry of Education, 2 engineering research centers of the Ministry of Education, 1 key laboratory of the Ministry of Culture and Tourism, 70 provincial scientific innovation platforms.


SNNU continues to promote high-level opening up and to expand international reputation and influence. The university has established friendly cooperative relations with more than 200 universities and educational institutions in 40 countries and regions, including the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, France, Germany, Russia, Australia, Japan, South Korea, Kazakhstan, Hungary, etc., and carried out exchanges and cooperation in various forms. In active response to the Belt and Road Initiative,the university initiated the Teacher Education Alliance, the Humanities and Social Sciences Alliance, and the Library, Archive & Press Alliance along the Silk Road. Also, with the joint efforts of Samarkand State University of Uzbekistan, the university has established Overseas Center for Uzbekistan Studies of SNNU and SNNU Overseas Base for Chinese Language Teaching Practice.


The university attaches great importance to the cultivation of talents with international vision, and has established cultivation platforms such as the “Innovative & Practice Base for the Cultivation of Globally Competitive Talents” “Global Competence of Youth”, and a test center for Certificate for Bilingual Teachers Competence. Besides, it offers international courses and more than 160 students exchanging programs, including exchanging students, overseas university visiting, joint-training, Volunteer Chinese Language Teachers , international organization internship, and cultural experiencing etc. For many years in a row, the university has conducted international summer schools and invited approximately 200 foreign teachers from over 20 countries including the U.S., the U.K., Canada, and Australia to teach and lecture.


Since 1965, the university has been making efforts in programs related to international students studying in China. So far, it has cultivated nearly 10,000 international students from 127 countries and regions. Now, the university has established a comprehensive system for international student enrollment, covering undergraduate, master’s, and doctoral programs with a wide range of key disciplines.
